Omaha, Neb. — Brinker Harding, the leading Republican candidate for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, today praised Nebraska’s federal delegation for standing firm to reopen the government and blasted Washington Democrats for manufacturing a crisis and hurting American families.
House and Senate Republicans have voted multiple times to pass a clean Continuing Resolution (CR) — the same approach used under President Obama to keep the government open — yet Senate Democrats have blocked it 13 times, forcing this shutdown for political gain.
Beginning Saturday, the consequences will grow even more severe: 150,000 Nebraskans who rely on SNAP and other assistance programs will not receive their benefits due to this unnecessary shutdown.
“This shutdown is unnecessary, reckless, and hurting everyday Americans,” said Harding. “As I highlighted weeks ago, military servicemembers, working families, and seniors are being hurt the most. Republicans have voted again and again to fund the government with a clean CR — the standard set by President Obama. Democrats are the ones blocking it. They are playing politics with people’s paychecks, basic food assistance, national security, and essential services. It’s wrong, and Nebraskans know it.”
Even federal labor leadership agrees. The President of the American Federation of Government Employees, representing more than 800,000 federal workers, said this week that, “It’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today. No half measures, and no gamesmanship.”
Despite this bipartisan acknowledgment, Democratic leaders are openly admitting they view the shutdown as political leverage. Democrat Minority Whip Katherine Clark stated that, “Shutdowns are terrible… families are going to suffer… but it is one of the few leverage times we have.”
“That quote says it all,” Harding continued. “Democrats are knowingly inflicting pain on American families — including 150,000 Nebraskans who may not get their SNAP benefits — because they think it helps them politically. That’s not leadership — that’s political cynicism at its worst.”
Harding praised Nebraska’s federal delegation for continuing to push to reopen the government and restore critical services, stating “I’m proud of Nebraska’s delegation for fighting to reopen the government and do what’s right. We should be putting country over party, always. Enough games — let’s fund the government, pay our workers, protect our families, and move forward.” To learn more or join the team, visit BrinkerHarding.com
